PROFESSIONAL DAYS AND MID TERM

YIPEE!

Students are fortunate to have four days to study, hit the books, and of course have a little fun. The combined mid-term,and professional days (two days each) during the last week of October were well deserved. Jack Hayward High came through again as we hosted over 500 hundred primary and high school teachers from the public schools. A few educators from private and church schools also attended the Ministry of Education sponsored work-shops. Presenters from New Providence and Grand-Bahama conducted approximately twenty sessions that included Business Studies, Reading in the Content Areas,Technical Studies, Counselling Strategies and of course Library Skills Revision.

Teachers enjoyed meeting colleagues from various schools and preparing for the upcoming semester. Enjoy your well deserved break. Students who borrowed books from the library over the long mid-term break, get ready to give a verbal or written report at the drop of a hat.

When we return to school let's get into Blogging. How does that sound?
Until we return........ take care and have a safe one.

Weekly Assembly

School Librarian Mrs. Carroll conducted morning assembly on Tuesday 14 October, 2008 for the school body of approximately 1,400. Mrs. Beneby library custodian and ninth grader Kenneth Miller winner of the Public Service Speech contested assisted with prayers and scripture reading.

The Theme for the week was, 'The Power of Words'. Both negative and positive spoken and written words were explained. Students were asked to be careful of the words they speak and keep them soft and sweet, you never know from day to day which ones you'll have to eat. Outline of the presentation is displayed on the Smart Cats Bulletin Board. Scripture references from the Bible especially the book of Proverbs are highlighted.

Tuesday 14 October, 2008 Freeport News published a list of successful students who were awarded BJC and BJC certificates. Check it out or stop by the Smart Cats Library to see if your name is on that list. Until next time, hit the books and get ready for mid-term break which begins next Tuesday. Just a reminder, come by the Library and borrow a book. It's only one dollar, $1 to join the Smart Cats.

Keeping the Beat

Tuesday 7th October, new prefects and Awardees were recognized in a special assembly in the gymnasium. The guest speaker for the occasion was former student Pastor Sturrup who gave a five point presentation on the theme. Proud parents and family members attended this brief ceremony and the event made the Freeport News the following day.

Students of Library Science classes are now completing research assignments on the computer. Each grade is divided in four groups and they take turns at two computers. The other two groups complete research by using books, newspapers or magazines. This is a cool way to find information on the Bahamas Government and Ministers.

We will be learning how to make blogs during the next session. How Cool! Will keep you posted.
